OVPN split tunneling on Mac
OVPN's desktop app has split tunneling on Windows only; the macOS app doesn't offer it. But OVPN hands out standard WireGuard configs from your account, so you can put a single Mac app on OVPN while everything else stays on your normal connection.
Get a WireGuard config from OVPN
- Sign in and open OVPN's WireGuard configuration generator. You need an active subscription.
- Pick the Standard service, then a country, city and server. Each can be set to All.
- Click Generate WireGuard keys. The private key is created in your browser and goes into the file.
- Download. One server gives you a single
.conf; several give you a zip with one .conf per server.
Put one app on it with VPNonly
- Install VPNonly and open the ⋯ menu → Import WireGuard config….
- Choose the
.conf, or the whole zip. Pick the exit country from the menu at the bottom.
- Search for an app, flip its switch. It relaunches once, then it's on the VPN and nothing else is.
Three things worth knowing:
- OVPN allows one connection per key at a time, and every file in a zip shares the same key. If you use VPNonly on two Macs, or keep OVPN's own app connected too, generate a separate key for each.
- If you paste your own public key instead of generating one, the file has a placeholder where the private key goes. Replace it before importing.
- Servers OVPN adds later aren't in an old download. Generate again to pick them up.
